Course Report from Peter Watts
I often refer to winter decline, or simply maintaining the turf as best we can during a difficult period of the year. Part of the strategy is to cut the grass at a generous height to allow for wear and tear during winter. Variation in the seasons can make this strategy something of a balancing act.
Before the onset of Spring we actually lower the cutting heights of tees, fairways and roughs. The lowering of cutting heights through the second half of the cooler months is a manageable way of eliminating the surface thatch from the previous season which ultimately is replaced by new spring growth.
This week is significant in the fact that we have lowered the fairway height from 18mm to 16mm.
From a golf course perspective this week was a turning point where we start preparing for the on coming Spring.
We continue with our drainage work around 13TH and 16TH tees. A spell of dry weather is of huge benefit at present.
The volunteers made big progress this week in the annual detailing of forest floor areas.
Muirfield Open Amateur
The Muirfield Open Amateur will be held this Sunday morning.
A strong field of 82 entrants will tee up meaning we can utilise a two-tee start. Good luck to all entrants.
Junior Medal
In July last year the club began a Junior Medal competition in conjunction with the Sunday competition. The junior with the best score on the day is awarded 25 points while the 2nd and 3rd best scores are given 20 & 15 points respectively. The other junior competitors are given 10 points for participating. On the 1st Sunday of each month an additional 15 points as well as a Junior Monthly Medal are awarded to the junior with the best score on the day.
A progressive total score was kept and congratulations go to Harry Sanchez who is the winner in this inaugural year with a total of 615 points. Aiden Wilson is the runner-up with 350 points. The competition starts again this coming Sunday.
